Winners Announcement for 2016 Korea Tourism Photo Contest

#1 Grand Prize – ‘Spring in Unjoru Pavilion’

The grand prize of 2016 Korea Tourism Photo contest captured the beauty of spring season at the Unjoru Pavilion in Gurye-gun, Jeollanam-do. With a top view of a typical aristocrat’s residence during the Joseon dynasty as the background, the fully bloomed white magnolia flowers in the front yard surrounded with jangdokdae (platform for crocks of sauces and condiments) beneath brings together a picturesque outlook of Korea.

#2 Gold Prize – ‘Red Plum Blossoms at Hwaeomsa Temple’ 

Taken at Hwaeomsa Temple in Gurye-gun, Jeollanam-do, the photo emanates a tranquil atmosphere of the temple, along with red apricot blossoms that blends in harmoniously. In particular, the Simni (10ri) Cherry Blossom Road connecting Hwaeomsa Temple to Ssanggyesa Temple is one of top destinations for cherry blossoms in the nation, attracting many visitors here every year.

#3 Silver Prizes – ‘Unmunsa Temple’ (left) / ‘Spring of Bangokji Reservoir’ (right)

Two photographs were awarded the silver prize of the 2016 Korea Tourism Photo Contest. The photo on the left is an autumn landscape of Unmunsa Temple in Cheongdo-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do. A mystical ambiance exudes from the photo with Unmunsa Temple set in the middle, encircled by the magnificent mountains and low clouds. On the other hand, the photo on the right captures a spring setting of Bangokjji in Namsan-myeon, Gyeongsan-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do. From the clear blue skies to the rows of trees reflection onto the crystal clear waters, the spring vibe was strongly expressed.

#4 PyeongChang Organization Special Prize – ‘Winter at a Ranch’

The above photo was awarded the special prize in celebration of the upcoming 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics. The photo was taken during winter at Daegwallyeong Sheep Farm in Pyeongchang-gun, Gangwon-do. Fields of the sheep farm covered in white snow like a warm blanket, creating a cozy feeling to the mind.

#5 Bronze Prizes – ‘Lotus Lanterns’ (top) / ‘Making mini rice cake balls for Winter Solstice’ (bottom left) / ‘Windy Island, Jeju-do’ (bottom right)

A total of three photos were awarded the bronze prize. The top photo entitled ‘Lotus Lanterns’ was taken at Manyeonsa Temple in Hwasun-gun, Jeollanam-do during winter. Kkachibap refers to food given to magpies and other birds, which usually comprises of leftover persimmons that are hung on the trees for them. Bright red lanterns hung over the snow covered bare tree branches and grounds made the temple scene even more surreal than before. The bottom left photo entitled ‘Making mini rice cake balls for Winter Solstice’ was taken at Samgwangsa Temple in Jin-gu, Busan, featuring a scene where the locals are making saeal (glutinous rice ball). The bottom right photo was a scene taken at Jeju Stone Park in Jeju-do Island, when strong winds were blowing and thus the title ‘Windy Island, Jeju’.

#6 Non-Korean Photographer Special Prize – ‘Noryangjin Fisheries Wholesale Market’

The special prize for non-Korean photographers this year goes to ‘Noryangjin Fisheries Wholesale Market.’ Korea’s most representative fisheries market in Seoul. Fresh seafood along with sign boards in all shapes and colors, the photo strikingly captured a typical busy scene at a local fisheries market
