Culture of Jeju Haenyeo, Designated UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity

Photo: A Jeju haenyeo diving in the seaThe Culture of Jeju Haenyeo (Women Divers) is as the nation’s 19th Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO designated on November 30, 2016.

The emblazoned haenyeo culture includes muljil, which refers to the diving method that involves no oxygen equipment; jamsu-gut, a pre-diving ritual ceremony praying for safe dives; and haenyeo norae, songs that the women divers sing when aboard boats heading out to the sea. The committee mentioned that haenyeo culture represents the region’s unique and eco-friendly way of harvesting that protects the marine environment. In celebration of the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity designation, the Jeju Haenyeo Museum will be offering free admission to all visitors from December 1 to December 31, 2016.
